In between I play tennis, take my daughter horse riding, read a bit of this and a bit of that. Poetry, novels, non-fiction.

My ultimate ambition is to build an observatory. Not in the modern mode but in the ancient mode. My inspiration is Stonehenge, The Egyptian Pyramid, The Mayan Pyramid and the discovery of The Star Mirror by Mark Vidler.

At age 21 something very significant happened which has continued to be important for the ensuing 21 years and is likely to be pivotal for another 21 years.

Until this time my life was dominated by the modern scientific view of the world. My father was steeped in the scientific, rational mindset. His profession was engineer. I was schooled in a scientific mindset and since I demonstrated excellence in this field I never needed to look elsewhere for encouragement and support.

Understand what I mean. I thrived in science and all its derivatives. Science nourished me. It stimulated my mind and brought me recognition, applause and awards.

At age 21 that ended. I was disillusioned with science. I needed more. My knowledge needed more depth, more meaning, more challenges.

Now I know that culture can be divided into three sections. Art - Science - Religion. Three-ness is implicit in human constitution. It is immediately recognisable in the physical constitution as head, limbs and the middle. The essential components of the middle are the heart and lungs. The heart leans somewhat toward the limbs and the lungs support the head.

So my life had been one sided. Science had pre dominated over Art and Religion. I am aware that Religion is not necessarily a popular word lately. It can be kind of replaced by spirituality.

At age 21 it was the spirit which demanded my attention. In retrospect it was a spiritual awakening but it happened in normal wake a day consciousness.

In my scientific view of the world astrology was nonsense. I considered astrology superstitious stuff for weak minded people. This was inherent in the fact that it presumed authority over things which are indefined like fate and destiny. Not only did I consider astrology nonsense I guess I inherited the opinion that it was unhealthy.

Unhealthy. That is certainly a common judgement of the subject. Not only is astrology irrational it also poisons the mind.

Anyhow. At age 21 I changed my mind. Or my mind was changed for me. However these things happen.

I was picking grapes with a woman companion somewhere near Mildura in a region called the Mallee or Riverina. One evening after sunset at the end of a long day in the sun picking grapes my companion pointed to the eastern horizon where the full moon was rising and hallowed - Look! The Harvest Moon.

Three words that changed my life. THE HARVEST MOON.

At that moment I recognised the reality of the rhythms in sun, moon and stars and the part they play in human, social life.

When I got back to Melbourne I constructed my horoscope and began to investigate the laws and language of my newly discovered science.

I still have a strong pre disposition to scientific enquiry and I bring this into astrology.

Now I need to reassure people who will be offended at the idea that thier own destiny may be read off a horoscope like reading a book.

Understand. The human soul is implicitly private. Nothing of the soul of another person is available for perusal except what the individual volunteers from themself.

So neither an astrologer nor clairvoyant has the power to see into the soul of another person. Claiming such ability is a fraud. For many people there is an instinctive knowledge of this fact. Hence so much skepticism about this subject.

An astrologer can define events. An astrologer can define the critical times in a persons life. But an astrologer can not be certain of the meaning these things will have for the person involved.

It is not an easy matter for an astrologer to predict exactly what will happen and when. The more closely defined the time the less clear it will be exactly what will happen. And vice versa. The more closely defined what is going to happen the less clear it is exactly when it will happen. This parallels findings in quantum physics.

So - even if an astrologer is able to predict an event in a person's life - the meaning that the event has for the other person remains a mystery. It can be investigated. It can be conjured based on the persons history, but finding the meaning will always depend on what is volunteered from the person themself. Most of the valuable insights are only available in conversation.

My intention here is to address the offense that the subject of astrology causes to many people. If I can lead someone past the initial resistance they feel toward astrology then we win a small victory - together.

For most people who resist entertaining thoughts that stars are connected to human destiny know very little about the discipline of astrology.

Perhaps there is the fear that if their destiny is written down at the time of birth then their choices will be limited.

Good point. I acknowledge this as an appropriate fear. I know in my own life how I refrain from certain endeavours at times because my horoscope indicates pain or waste of time or beyond my capacity...

Mind you, we all live with limiting thoughts. Thoughts that prevent us from being all that we could be. Many of them habitual thoughts that escape our attention.

Well, astrology makes those habitual thoughts transparent.

The Indians call astrology Jyotish which means the science of light. Does that mean that astrology cultivates clarity? Do you see what I am doing. I simply take the word transparent and play with it. Transparent - to let the light through.
